The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a firm warning to operators of event centres, nightclubs, lounges, and organisers of social gatherings to desist from obstructing traffic or converting public roads into makeshift parking lots.
Speaking during a weekend surveillance and inspection of major traffic corridors across the metropolis, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed concern over the frequent misuse of public roadways during high-profile events, which often results in gridlock, hampers emergency services, and causes undue hardship for road users.
“The Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will no longer tolerate the reckless encroachment on public infrastructure by private establishments,”Bakare-Oki declared, adding that venues found guilty of obstruction will face immediate penalties and legal action.
He directed LASTMA Zonal Commanders and Monitoring Units to increase patrols and enforcement, especially during weekends and festive seasons, while urging hospitality and entertainment businesses to consult LASTMA for traffic planning and management before hosting large events.
He emphasized that maintaining traffic order is a shared civic responsibility crucial to building a livable and efficient Lagos.
