Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has confirmed that all outstanding payments due to Nigeria’s national football team have been cleared, ending days of uncertainty ahead of the team’s crucial World Cup qualifying match against Gabon.
Troost-Ekong made this known in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday evening, assuring Nigerians that the players are now fully focused and united in their preparations for the decisive fixture.
“Issue RESOLVED. Outstanding financials cleared and on ground. Team is UNITED and focused as before on representing NIGERIA with our maximum for the games ahead! @NGSuperEagles,” the captain wrote.
Earlier, the defender had explained that the players’ decision to boycott training was due to unpaid bonuses and allowances dating back to 2019, dismissing claims that they had demanded special incentives for the Gabon clash.
“Once resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement or demand apart from the rightful request is false. All we want and continue to do is focus on the big games ahead,” he said in an earlier post.
Troost-Ekong maintained that the brief protest was not an act of defiance, but a call for accountability over longstanding financial issues.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olapade, clarified that all funds allocated to the Super Eagles had been duly remitted to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) since he assumed office.
Addressing concerns over unpaid allowances and logistics, Olapade explained that the NSC does not disburse money directly to players or officials, as financial transactions related to the national teams are handled solely by the NFF.
“The NSC has remitted the funds to the NFF as at when due since I became DG. That cannot be contradicted. NSC pays to the NFF, and all expenditures for their activities are done by them,” he stated. “Up until yesterday, there has been no reason to query. So wait and see, that’s all I can say for now.”
With the issue now resolved, the Super Eagles are expected to resume full training and focus on securing victory in their decisive qualifier against Gabon.
