Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, the pioneering journalist and wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
Dr. Abiola died on Tuesday at the age of 82.
In a condolence statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu described the late media icon as an “Amazon” whose contributions to the growth and development of journalism in Nigeria remain unmatched.
He highlighted her trailblazing role as the first Nigerian woman to become an editor and Managing Director of a national newspaper.
“Dr. Doyin Abiola etched her name in gold in the media industry,” the governor said, adding that she mentored generations of journalists and supported the nation’s democratic journey.
He offered heartfelt condolences to the Abiola family, friends, and members of the journalism community, praying for God’s comfort and the eternal repose of her soul.
