The Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Akeem Olalekan Dauda, has stepped up environmental sanitation enforcement in the council area as part of efforts to implement the environmental pillar of the administration’s development agenda.
Dauda, popularly known as AKOD, carried out inspection visits to Alade Market and the Allen Avenue environs as part of the ongoing environmental sanitation and compliance exercise aimed at promoting a cleaner and healthier environment across the local government.
The inspection exercise, according to the council chairman, forms part of his administration’s commitment to maintaining proper sanitation standards across markets, streets and other public spaces within the council area.
Speaking during the exercise, Dauda stressed the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining environmental cleanliness.
“We are committed to ensuring that Ikeja remains clean, orderly and environmentally safe for all residents. This inspection is part of our ongoing efforts to enforce sanitation regulations and encourage responsible environmental practices among traders, residents and business owners,” he said.
He urged traders and shop owners operating within major commercial hubs to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
“Environmental cleanliness is not the responsibility of government alone. Traders, shop owners and residents must take ownership of their environment and ensure that waste is properly managed and public spaces are kept clean,” he added.
Dauda also noted that the sanitation and enforcement exercise is in fulfilment of the environmental pillar of the administration’s I.K.E.J.A Agenda, which focuses on creating a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for residents.
“The ‘E’ component of our I.K.E.J.A Agenda focuses on the environment. Our goal is to ensure that Ikeja maintains high sanitation standards and remains a place where people can live, work and do business in a healthy and orderly environment,” he said.
The chairman warned that the local government would not hesitate to enforce environmental regulations against violators.
“We will continue to carry out regular inspections across markets, streets and other public spaces. Those who fail to comply with environmental regulations will face the necessary sanctions in line with existing laws,” Dauda stated.
Officials of the Department of Environment and Sanitation of Ikeja Local Government accompanied the chairman during the inspection, led by the Head of Department, Sanitarian Omotayo.
Also present were newly sworn-in supervisory councillors and special advisers in the council, who joined the enforcement team in monitoring compliance and engaging with traders and residents on the importance of maintaining a clean environment.
Dauda assured residents that the environmental sanitation drive would continue across different communities within the local government area.
“This exercise will not be limited to a few locations. We will continue to move across the entire local government area to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations and improve environmental safety for everyone,” he said.
He reiterated that maintaining environmental standards is critical to public health and overall quality of life in the council area.
“Our administration is committed to improving the quality of life of residents. A clean environment is essential for public health, and we will continue to work with the community to sustain a hygienic and orderly Ikeja,” he added.
