The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed allegations of misconduct against a female officer captured in a viral video, maintaining that her conduct during a stop-and-search operation in the Festac area complied with established policing procedures.

The video, which circulated on X on Sunday, showed a confrontation between the officer and a woman who objected to the manner of the search. The woman was seen questioning the officer’s approach as her belongings were inspected and resisted instructions to remove her wig.

‎The footage also showed the officer directing the woman to stop recording and delete the video, a move that further heightened tensions at the scene.

‎In a statement posted on its official X account, the police command said the officer acted within the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which empowers officers to carry out stop-and-search operations in public spaces as part of crime prevention efforts.

‎“The officer’s actions were lawful and consistent with existing regulations guiding stop-and-search duties,” the command stated.

‎It added that the operation adhered to procedural guidelines requiring that female suspects be searched by female officers.

‎”Standard protocol was observed, as the search was conducted by a female officer, in line with established procedures,” the statement said.

‎The command further justified the thoroughness of such searches, noting that criminal elements often conceal prohibited items in unconventional locations.

‎”Experience has shown that illicit items are sometimes hidden in wigs, clothing, and other personal effects, necessitating thorough but lawful searches,” it said.

‎The police urged residents to cooperate with officers during stop-and-search operations, emphasising the role of public compliance in enhancing security.

‎”We urge members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with police officers carrying out their lawful duties, as this contributes significantly to effective crime prevention and public safety,” the statement added.
