The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has addressed the ongoing agitation by some retired officers over pension entitlements, clarifying its position while assuring that the rights of the retirees to peaceful protest will be fully protected.
The Force also condemned the politicization of the matter, describing it as an attempt by some actors to exploit the legitimate concerns of ex-officers for divisive purposes.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the protest scheduled for Monday, 21st July 2025, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other notified states, will be handled with the utmost respect and professionalism.
“The Inspector-General of Police has directed Commissioners of Police to ensure adequate security coverage, prevent hijack of the protest by non-retired elements, and protect the dignity of our retirees,” Adejobi said.
ACP Adejobi explained that the agitation for improved pension, especially the call for exiting the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), dates back to 2014 and has seen consistent engagement from successive police leaderships.
“While our leadership supports the cause in principle, we must acknowledge the legal and financial complexities that surround this issue. The solution lies beyond the Inspector-General’s office and requires inter-agency collaboration,” he added.
To address the immediate needs of retired officers, the current police leadership is exploring alternative support measures, including internally generated funds and private sector partnerships.
“These are not just policy declarations; implementation is already in motion,” Adejobi affirmed, urging calm and continued engagement from stakeholders. He emphasized that officers still planning to protest will be accorded their full constitutional rights but warned serving personnel against being misled by misinformation.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to the welfare of those who served this nation with honour.This moment is not only a test of our institutional values but a chance to demonstrate leadership that listens, responds, and acts responsibly,” Adejobi concluded.
