Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the death of veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, as a great loss to Nigeria’s creative industry.
Jacobs, who died at the age of 84, was one of Nigeria’s most revered actors, with a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television and film.
His death was announced on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, by his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, through their social media handles. The family described him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and expressed gratitude to God for a life well lived.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu said Jacobs’ legacy would live on through his works and the memories he created.
The Governor said the late actor’s contributions to the creative industry would remain evergreen, noting that his talent, grace and creativity left an enduring mark on Nigerian theatre, television and film.
He added that Jacobs used his craft to entertain, inspire and positively influence society, while contributing significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
“Without any iota of doubt, Olu Jacobs is one of the respected fathers of Nollywood. He was a legendary actor and filmmaker who featured in several British and Nigerian television series and movies.
“He shaped the Nigerian theatre, television, and film industry for over five decades. His extraordinary life and the lasting impact he made with his artistry have solidified his legacy. The vibrant spirit he embodied and the joy he shared through his craft will always remain in our hearts.
“Olu Jacobs will be sorely missed by family, friends, fans, associates, and countless admirers of his talent and contributions to Nigerian entertainment,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, the actor trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He began his professional career on British television and appeared in international productions, including The Dogs of War and Pirates, before returning to Nigeria and becoming a major figure in the development of modern Nollywood.
Known for his deep voice, commanding screen presence and versatility, Jacobs featured in more than 120 films and received several honours during his career, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Together with Joke Silva, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group and played a significant role in the development of the performing arts in Nigeria. He also became a mentor and respected figure to generations of actors and filmmakers.
Sanwo-Olu extended his heartfelt condolences to Joke Silva, the Jacobs family, friends, colleagues, fans and the entire Nigerian entertainment industry.
The Governor prayed for the peaceful repose of Jacobs’ soul and asked God to grant the family and members of the creative industry the strength to bear the loss, as well as the comfort to cherish and honour the remarkable legacy he left behind.
