The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun has reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to neutrality, professionalism, and fairness in the country’s electoral process.
He made this known while receiving a high-level delegation from the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) on Tuesday, July 30, 2025, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The delegation, led by Mrs. Davidetta Browne Lansanah, Chairperson of the National Elections Commission of Liberia, included key electoral stakeholders such as Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Mr. Chinedu Chinedu, Senior Programme Officer at ECONEC, Prof. Bolade Eyinla, Chief Technical Adviser to INEC, and other partners.
Their visit centered on dialogue and strategic planning to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of the 2027 general elections.Mrs. Lansanah, in her remarks, commended the Inspector-General for the audience, emphasizing the police’s indispensable role in electoral security and stability.
She noted that the dialogue aimed to review key observations from the 2023 elections and propose actionable strategies for the future.In response, the IGP outlined the tripartite role of the Police in elections—covering pre-election conflict management, election day logistics and security, and post-election law enforcement.
He reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police remains a neutral institution committed to protecting democratic values and ensuring credible electoral outcomes.
He also acknowledged the positive assessments received from international observers in previous elections and underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between security agencies and electoral bodies.
