Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Wednesday swiftly intervened in a serious road accident involving two heavy-duty trucks along the Otedola Bridge, inward Berger–Ojodu corridor, Lagos.
The accident, which involved a 14-tyre Scania truck loaded with wheat and a 6-tyre Iveco mini-truck carrying cartons of Gala sausage rolls, occurred when both drivers reportedly engaged in a struggle for the Right of Way.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment, LASTMA, the impact of the collision was severe, leaving one of the drivers with multiple injuries to his legs and head.
He said the victim was rescued from the wreckage by LASTMA’s Incident Management and Enforcement Unit, led by Mr. Akeem Adeosun, with support from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Police.
The injured driver was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.Adebayo added that the scale of the accident prompted a temporary closure of the expressway inward Berger to allow rescue officials and heavy-duty equipment to safely transload the wheat and clear the wreckage. Normal traffic flow was later restored after the operation.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare–Oki, condemned the reckless behaviour of some truck drivers, describing the crash as avoidable.
He reiterated that LASTMA remains committed to enforcing traffic laws, protecting lives, and maintaining order on Lagos roads.Bakare–Oki also commended the prompt and professional response of the LASTMA Rescue Team and wished the injured driver a speedy recovery.
He urged all motorists to exercise patience and discipline, especially on major expressways and intersections, stressing that adherence to traffic rules is crucial for safety and sanity on the state’s roads.
