The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismissed reports alleging an attempted assassination on Lieutenant AM Yerima, the naval officer who recently clashed with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command’s spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, described the circulating reports as “false” and “unverified,” noting that no such incident was reported or recorded anywhere in the Federal Capital Territory.
“The attention of the FCT Police Command has been drawn to publications circulating on social media alleging an attempted assassination on Lt. Ahmed Yerima,” the statement read.
“The Command wishes to categorically state that no such incident has been reported or recorded anywhere within the Federal Capital Territory.
The public is advised to disregard this false information and desist from spreading unverified claims capable of causing unnecessary panic.”
The rebuttal follows media reports on Sunday claiming that Yerima was trailed by unidentified men dressed in black, travelling in two unmarked Hilux vans. The chase allegedly began around 6:30 p.m. at the NIPCO filling station along the Kubwa expressway and continued up to Gado–NASCO way.
According to the reports, the naval officer allegedly escaped through a “strategic manoeuvre” during a high-speed pursuit.
It was further claimed that Yerima, who was driving a vehicle with tinted windows, was later stopped by police officers around the Kubwa area and asked to identify himself, after which he was allowed to continue his trip.
The FCT Police Command, however, insists that the alleged assassination attempt is unfounded and urges residents to rely only on verified information.
