South-West Governors Meet in Ibadan After Lagos Security Parley

Governors of the South-West states are expected to converge in Ibadan, Oyo State, for an emergency meeting aimed at addressing pressing regional challenges, particularly the growing security concerns across the zone.

The closed-door session, scheduled to hold at the Governor’s Office, Agodi, is being hosted by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde. All six governors from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states are expected to be in attendance.

Sources indicate that the sudden meeting may be a follow-up to last Friday’s Town Hall Security Meeting held in Lagos, attended by South-West senators and chaired by Senator Tokunbo Abiru.

The Lagos meeting reportedly highlighted several security flashpoints across the region, prompting a renewed push for coordinated action between the executive and legislative arms of government within the South-West. Monday’s gathering is therefore expected to harmonise these concerns and chart a consolidated response.

This emergency session also continues a long-standing tradition of regional cooperation among South-West governors, who have held several strategic meetings in recent years to strengthen security, economic integration, and infrastructural development under the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN).

Notably, their 2019 summit in Ibadan led to the creation of the Amotekun Corps, an unprecedented regional security outfit designed to address banditry, kidnapping, and communal clashes. Subsequent meetings in Akure (2020) and Lagos (2021) further expanded collaboration on agriculture, technology, and cross-border intelligence sharing.

At today’s meeting, the governors are expected to review the performance and operational challenges of Amotekun, explore new joint security interventions, and consider measures to fast-track regional infrastructure such as transport corridors, energy projects, and digital connectivity.

With emerging threats and the need for deeper integration, the outcome of the Ibadan gathering is expected to shape the next phase of South-West regional governance.
