Former Governor of Ogun State and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has accused Governor Dapo Abiodun of political persecution following the state government’s move to demolish some of his properties in Sagamu.
In a statement signed by his media aide, Steve Oliyide, on Saturday, Daniel alleged that notices of contravention, quit, and demolition—giving a three-day ultimatum—were pasted on his Sagamu private residence, Asoludero Court; Conference Hotels Limited; and its annexe on Friday, August 8.
The notices, issued under the provisions of the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, cited alleged violations of building regulations.
Describing the claims as “ludicrous” and politically motivated, Daniel argued that the affected properties were constructed between 2004 and 2015, long before the 2022 law came into effect.
He accused the Abiodun administration of bypassing due process, likening the move to a “thuggish tactic” aimed at intimidation.
He also recalled the controversial 2023 demolition of DATKEM Plaza in Ijebu Ode, owned by his wife, which is the subject of an ongoing court case.
Reacting, Governor Abiodun’s Special Adviser on Media, Kayode Akinmade, denied any political motive, stating that the exercise was part of a broader review of building documentation across the state.
“Most of them have violated building plans, and the letter was not sent to him alone. Nobody is after anybody,” Akinmade said, adding that a comprehensive government statement would be issued in due course.
