The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has arrested a reckless driver who attempted to flee after knocking down a pedestrian in an accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, just after the Ogudu flyover inward Ifako.
The driver of a Nissan Jeep (registration number KJA 354 ET) had reportedly tried to overtake a 40-foot articulated truck at high speed when he lost control, hitting a male pedestrian before crashing into the road’s central median.
Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, confirmed that instead of helping the victim, the driver tried to escape but was quickly intercepted by LASTMA operatives.
“Our officers acted promptly to apprehend the suspect while also ensuring the injured pedestrian was rescued and taken for urgent medical attention,” he said.
The suspect was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division for further investigation, while the damaged vehicle was also evacuated to the station.
Despite the accident occurring near ongoing rehabilitation works on the Ogudu–Ifako bridge intersection, LASTMA officers worked swiftly to maintain traffic flow and prevent gridlock.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the officers for their professionalism and warned motorists against speeding and dangerous driving, stressing that such recklessness puts both drivers and pedestrians at grave risk.
