The Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), has thrown his weight behind the planned On-Street Parking Scheme by the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), while stressing the need for increased sensitisation to educate residents on proper parking.
The Chairman pledged his support for the initiative following a strategic engagement with LASPA’s management team on Tuesday.
Dauda, who received the General Manager of LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, during a courtesy visit as part of ongoing stakeholder engagement ahead of the scheme’s rollout, emphasised the importance of public awareness.
“There is a need for more sensitisation to educate residents on proper parking,” he said.
He commended LASPA for its efforts in improving parking management across the state and expressed readiness to support the initiative.
“We appreciate LASPA’s proactive approach and its engagement with local authorities. Ikeja Local Government is fully ready to collaborate to ensure the success of this scheme,” the chairman said.
Dauda further stressed that residents must be adequately informed to ensure compliance.
“When people understand the benefits, compliance becomes easier and more sustainable,” he added.
Speaking during the meeting, Adelabu said the visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration with local government authorities and sensitising them on the Authority’s mandate, ongoing expansion plans, and the introduction of the On-Street Parking Scheme.
According to her, “the initiative is designed to ensure orderliness, improve traffic flow, and enhance the overall parking culture across the state.”
She disclosed that the scheme is scheduled to commence in 2026 as a pilot programme in selected local government areas, including Ikeja, noting that motorists would be required to pay for on-street parking in designated zones.
“The On-Street Parking Scheme will not only improve parking management but also create employment opportunities for residents within the benefiting communities,” Adelabu said.
Providing further insight, the LASPA boss explained that parking administration was originally under the purview of local governments before being ceded to the Authority by the Conference of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in Lagos State.
She added that councils stand to benefit significantly from the initiative, depending on their level of cooperation and support.
“Local governments are critical stakeholders in this process. Their collaboration will determine the level of success we achieve in implementing this scheme effectively,” she stated.
Adelabu reaffirmed LASPA’s commitment to inclusiveness, noting that the Authority remains open to suggestions and inputs from stakeholders to ensure seamless execution.
“We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure that this initiative delivers maximum value for residents and contributes meaningfully to urban development in Lagos,” she said.
