The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced a three-week mid-semester break following recent student protests linked to a newly introduced transportation system on campus.

The decision was approved on Tuesday by the University Senate after a review of the escalating situation triggered by student opposition to the transport arrangement.

In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the university said the break takes immediate effect and is intended to restore calm and safeguard members of the university community.

According to the statement, what began as protests against the transport policy later degenerated into disruptive actions, including the blockage of major access roads and alleged harassment of motorists.

The university noted that despite repeated interventions and appeals for restraint, tensions continued to rise, prompting concerns over safety and the risk of further breakdown of law and order.

Consequently, the Senate directed all students to proceed on an immediate three-week mid-semester break and vacate their halls of residence without delay.

Management added that consultations with relevant stakeholders would continue during the period to address the concerns raised and facilitate a smooth return to academic activities.

Parents and guardians have been advised to take note of the development and make appropriate arrangements for their wards.

The university also urged students to remain law-abiding throughout the break, reaffirming its commitment to student welfare and the maintenance of a stable academic environment.
