The Lagos State Government has directed motorists to use alternative routes following the planned emergency closure of Eko Bridge outbound for safety evaluation and repairs.

‎The government said the temporary closure, which affects the section between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, will commence on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as part of urgent measures aimed at ensuring the structural safety and long-term durability of the bridge.

‎Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the closure became necessary to allow engineers conduct critical safety investigations and immediate repair works on the bridge infrastructure.

‎According to him, only the outbound carriageway of the bridge leading toward Lagos Island will be affected by the closure, while the inward Lagos Island lane will remain fully accessible to motorists throughout the duration of the exercise

‎“The emergency closure is necessary to enable the government carry out vital safety investigations and repair works on the bridge in order to guarantee the safety of all road users,” Osiyemi stated.

‎He urged motorists heading toward Lagos Island to make use of the Third Mainland Bridge and other adjoining routes to access their destinations during the period of the repairs.

‎“In view of the closure between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, motorists are strongly advised to use alternative routes, particularly the Third Mainland Bridge, to minimise inconvenience and ensure smoother movement across the city,” he said.

The commissioner assured residents that adequate traffic management arrangements had been put in place to ease vehicular movement and reduce disruptions associated with the closure.

‎“We have deployed sufficient traffic management and security personnel along the affected corridors and alternative routes to guide motorists and maintain orderly traffic flow throughout the period of the repairs,” he added.

Osiyemi appealed to road users for patience, understanding and cooperation, stressing that the temporary inconvenience was necessary to safeguard lives and preserve critical transport infrastructure in the state.

‎“We appeal to members of the public to cooperate with traffic officials and comply with diversion directives as the government works to improve safety and maintain the integrity of key road infrastructure across Lagos State,” he said.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer and more efficient transportation systems, assuring residents that all necessary steps were being taken to complete the repairs as quickly as possible
