The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has withdrawn the operating licences of six Private Sector Participation (PSP) waste operators whose capacity to provide effective waste collection services fell below the required standards.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on his official social media handle on Tuesday.
Wahab said the affected operators were K-HS Integrated Services, formerly Gboleybos Nigeria Limited, in Igbogbo-Baiyeku; Deshasat Enterprises in Olorunda; Bailas Nigeria Company in Ojo; Guestimate Environmental Protection Company in Orile Agege; Evabol Ventures in Ajeromi-Ifelodun; and Korad Closet Empire Limited in Ojodu.
He said the affected service locations included Ward C1, Slot A, Abosan in Igbogbo-Baiyeku; Ibereko (LIMCA) in Olorunda; Sabo Oniba in Ojo; Papa Ashafa II in Orile Agege; Oluwa 1 in Ajeromi-Ifelodun; and Oke-Ira/Powerline in Ojodu.
According to Wahab, K-HS Integrated Services voluntarily withdrew from its service area, while the licences of the other five operators were terminated following regulatory assessments of their service capacity.
He said the decision was part of the state government’s regulatory efforts to ensure that operators entrusted with waste collection services had the capacity, competence and resources required to provide the expected services in their areas.
“As a government, we will continue to strengthen regulatory oversight, enforce performance standards and ensure that waste management operators live up to their responsibilities,” Wahab said.
He added that the state government would ensure that the affected communities continued to receive uninterrupted waste collection services through appropriate interventions.
Wahab also urged residents to patronise only approved waste management channels, stressing that keeping Lagos clean required the participation of residents, government agencies and waste management operators.
