The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has announced a landmark partnership between the Lagos State Government and Abbey Rangers Football Club, a renowned community football institution in the United Kingdom, to revolutionise grassroots football development in Nigeria.
The collaboration, the first of its kind between Nigeria and a UK community club, is aimed at nurturing young athletes and technical officials through international training, capacity building, and global exposure.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Lagos, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the partnership as a major milestone in the State’s mission to build a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem.
“This partnership represents a deliberate effort to connect Lagos with global best practices in grassroots football development. Abbey Rangers brings proven capacity, professional networks, and a strong commitment to community engagement that align perfectly with our vision,” Fatodu said.
He added that the partnership would provide Lagos-based athletes, coaches, and administrators with opportunities for international exchange, accredited certification, and technical training, thereby strengthening human capacity development across the sports sector.
Fatodu expressed appreciation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support for sports development, noting that the Governor’s leadership and investment in sports have made such collaborations possible.
“Mr. Governor has shown that sport is a strategic priority for youth empowerment, community cohesion, and economic advancement. His commitment to partnerships and innovation continues to position Lagos as Africa’s leading sports destination,” Fatodu added.
The partnership will focus on seven key pillars: talent development, coaching capacity enhancement, sports science integration, community engagement, policy advisory, resource mobilisation, and infrastructure optimisation.
It will also introduce statewide scouting programmes in schools and communities, athlete mentorship schemes, and scholarship opportunities — ensuring that young talents are discovered, trained, and supported to reach their full potential.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Abbey Rangers FC, Mr. Nick Riley, said the initiative would bridge cultures and create new opportunities for young people through football.
“We are proud to partner with Lagos State on this visionary project. Community football is a powerful tool for development and inclusion. Together, we will empower young athletes, raise coaching standards, and create environments where talent can thrive,” Riley said.
The Lagos–Abbey Rangers partnership marks Nigeria’s first structured grassroots football collaboration with a UK community club, a move expected to transform Lagos into a model for sustainable sports excellence and youth empowerment.
