A police inspector attached to the Isiala Mbano Division has lost his life after being knocked down by a truck during a routine stop-and-search operation in Imo State.
The deceased officer, identified as Inspector Habila Mangai, met his untimely death on April 18, 2026, while carrying out lawful duties along the Owerri–Okigwe Road at Amaraku.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the tragic incident occurred when a Mack truck, driven by one Chisom Ajah, rammed into the officer at the checkpoint.
“The late Inspector Habila Mangai was on lawful stop-and-search duty at Amaraku when he was tragically knocked down by a Mack truck,” the Force stated.
Following the impact, the officer was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where medical personnel confirmed him dead.
“He was promptly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was certified dead by attending medical personnel,” the statement added.
His remains have since been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
“The remains of the deceased officer have been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and further necessary procedures,” the Police noted.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck and the vehicle involved have been taken into custody for investigation.
“The driver and the vehicle have been taken into custody and handed over to the State Motor Traffic Department, Owerri, for detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the Force disclosed.
Reacting to the development, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command.
“The Inspector-General of Police commiserates with the family, colleagues, and the Imo State Police Command over this painful loss,” the statement read.
The IGP assured that the sacrifice of the fallen officer would not be in vain.
“He assures that the sacrifice of the deceased officer will not be in vain and that the Force remains committed to ensuring justice is served,” the statement added.
The Nigeria Police Force also reiterated its commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident.
“A comprehensive investigation has been instituted to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic occurrence, and appropriate actions will be taken in accordance with the law,” the Force said.
The Police further used the opportunity to call on motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly around operational points.
“The Force urges all motorists to exercise due care, obey traffic regulations, and remain vigilant, especially around police checkpoints and duty posts,” it stated.
The incident underscores the risks faced daily by law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties, even in routine operations.
