The Inspector-General of Police has approved the dismissal of officers involved in the April 26 Effurun incident, with plans underway to subject them to criminal prosecution upon completion of administrative procedures.
The Nigeria Police Force, in an update on the fatal shooting in Effurun, Delta State, which led to the death of Mr. Mene Ogidi, said all officers connected to the incident had earlier been withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for expedited disciplinary proceedings.
Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, disclosed that the Force Disciplinary Committee, alongside other internal processes, had concluded its review, establishing that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in clear violation of established rules governing the use of firearms.
“The findings of the Force Disciplinary Committee established unequivocally that the actions of the principal officer were unlawful, unprofessional, and a clear betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law,” Placid said.
He added that the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of the officer and others found culpable, noting that the Inspector-General had approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
“Upon completion of the necessary administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting,” he stated.
Reaffirming the stance of the Force, Placid stressed that the leadership of the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for abuse of power and unlawful use of force.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this fundamental principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” he said.
The Police spokesperson conveyed the condolences of the Inspector-General to the family of the deceased, assuring that the incident would not be treated lightly.
“The Inspector-General of Police extends his deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Mene Ogidi and assures that justice will not only be served but will be seen to be served in a manner that reinforces public confidence and institutional accountability,” Placid added.
He further urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing the commitment of the Force to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“All Nigerians are urged to remain calm, as the Force remains steadfast in ensuring accountability at all levels while upholding the rights and dignity of every citizen,” he said.
