A 15-hour gun battle between security operatives and suspected secessionists in Awa, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has left four members of the group dead.
The raid, carried out by the Anambra State Police Command in collaboration with local vigilantes, also led to the rescue of a kidnapped victim who had been held hostage in the insurgents’ camp.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a statement on Friday that the operation was based on credible intelligence and successfully dislodged the group from their base.
A large cache of arms and ammunition was recovered, including pump-action rifles, fabricated guns, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), vehicles, mobile phones, and other materials linked to their activities.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, assured residents that the command remains resolute in its efforts to rid the state of criminal elements. He added that further operations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects and dismantle other criminal camps across the state.
