The Ogun State Government has expressed profound condolences to the families, friends and associates of the victims of a tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of the state.

The accident, which claimed the lives of two persons, happened while Joshua and three others were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu.

According to an e-signed statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade, preliminary reports indicated that two male foreign nationals died on the spot, while Joshua and the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries.

“The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Livewell Morgue, Sagamu, while Anthony Joshua and the driver were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement said.

The statement further disclosed that the sport utility vehicle (SUV) conveying the occupants rammed into a stationary truck along the expressway.

While the severely damaged SUV has been evacuated to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division (MTD) office, efforts are ongoing to tow the truck involved to the same location to enable a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate and painful, the Ogun State Government lamented the loss of lives and noted that other victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical care.

“Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the state considers a devastating loss,” the statement added.

The government urged motorists to exercise utmost caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations, particularly during the festive season when vehicular movement is usually heavy.

Road safety officers and other security agencies were also enjoined to intensify surveillance and enforcement across the state to safeguard lives and property.

“As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured. May Almighty God grant the families left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement concluded.
