Atlético de Madrid have completed the signing of Nigerian international forward Ademola Lookman from Italian club Atalanta, with the player committing to a four-year contract that will keep him at the Spanish side until 30 June 2030.
The La Liga club confirmed the transfer in a statement published on its official website on Monday, describing Lookman as a proven attacker who arrives after an impressive spell in Serie A.
“Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta have reached an agreement for the transfer of Ademola Lookman, who has signed a contract with our club until 30 June 2030,” the statement said.
The club added that the 28-year-old successfully completed his medical examinations at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre in Madrid before finalising the move at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where he signed his contract in the presence of Atlético’s Chief Executive Officer, Miguel Ángel Gil.
Lookman joins Diego Simeone’s side following a standout period in Italy, where he re-established himself as one of Europe’s most decisive wide forwards.
Born in Wandsworth, London, on 20 October 1997, Lookman came through the youth ranks of Waterloo FC and Charlton Athletic, making his senior debut for Charlton in November 2015 at just 18.
His early promise earned him moves across Europe, with spells at Everton in the Premier League, RB Leipzig in Germany, and later Fulham and Leicester City, where he gained further top-flight experience.
Lookman joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022, a move that marked a turning point in his career. Under Gian Piero Gasperini, he flourished into a consistent goal threat and key attacking outlet.
During his time in Bergamo, Lookman made 137 appearances, scoring 55 goals and registering 27 assists in all competitions. His most defining moment came in the 2023/24 UEFA Europa League final, where he scored a stunning hat-trick in Atalanta’s 3–0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, handing the German side their only defeat of the season and securing Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy.
At international level, Lookman represents Nigeria, having switched allegiance from England. He has been a regular feature for the Super Eagles and was a key player in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, further enhancing his reputation on the continental stage.
Atlético Madrid’s acquisition of Lookman is expected to strengthen their attacking options as the club prepares for another domestic and European campaign, with the Nigerian forward bringing pace, versatility and proven big-game experience to Simeone’s squad.
