Bode George Backs PDP Convention, Rejects Calls for Postponement

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has declared his firm support for the party’s planned national convention, insisting that it must go ahead as scheduled despite moves by some party leaders to halt it.

George made the remarks during an interview on Arise Television on Thursday, while reacting to comments credited to former Senate President Bukola Saraki, who reportedly called for the suspension of the convention slated for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Saraki had earlier urged the PDP leadership to suspend the exercise and establish a caretaker committee, citing conflicting court orders that could jeopardize the legitimacy of the convention’s outcome.

But George dismissed the suggestion, accusing Saraki and others of pursuing selfish agendas. “You know, in this country, it amazes me the way people roll around purely for their selfish ends. The senator you mentioned, Saraki, was the one who first set up the reconciliation committee. So what has he done? Telling us on the eve of the convention that we should form a caretaker committee, I totally disagree with him,”
    George said.

The former Deputy National Chairman maintained that the PDP leadership remains intact, with most members of the National Working Committee (NWC) supporting the convention.

“The main party is still solidly intact. We are waiting for the ruling of the court in Ibadan. The Supreme Court has ruled that all party issues should be resolved internally, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,”
    he stated.

George condemned what he described as “reckless behaviour” within the party, saying it dishonours the legacy of the PDP’s founding fathers. “What is annoying and demeaning is what I call existential imbecility, terrible attitudes of these people. The founding fathers, for God’s sake, will be shaking in their graves,”
    he lamented.

Reacting to reports that the convention had been postponed, George accused some suspended officials, including the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, of acting beyond their authority.

“A few weeks ago, there was a National Working Committee meeting with about 19 members. Only three belong to the Anyanwu group. That’s why I said you hear the voice of Jacob, but the hand of Esau,”
    George added.

He reiterated that the party’s unity and internal strength would prevail over distractions, emphasizing that the PDP remains committed to due process and internal resolution of conflicts.
