The Lagos State Government has announced traffic diversion plans ahead of the Y2025 Capital City Race scheduled to hold in the early hours of Saturday, 22nd November, 2025.
The 10-kilometre race, organised by the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) in collaboration with the Capital City Race Organisers, will take place between 6:00am and 9:00am.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, the race will kick off at the Ikeja Shopping Mall and proceed through Billings Way to Kudirat Abiola Way, before moving toward the Opebi Link Bridge, Adeniyi Jones, and Oba Akran Avenue (LASUTH axis). The event will end at Archbishop Vining Memorial Church on Oba Akinjobi Way, Ikeja.
The Ministry explained that several roads, junctions, and intersections along the designated race route will experience partial closure throughout the three-hour event. These sections will, however, be opened intermittently as the race progresses to ease vehicular flow.
Director, Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola (Mrs.), said the diversions were necessary to ensure the safety of athletes and road users. “These partial road closures are part of the traffic management plan for the Capital City Race. We appeal to motorists to cooperate with officials on duty,” she said.
She added that officers of the Nigerian Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed along the route to manage traffic, provide guidance to motorists, and maintain order throughout the event.
Ogunlola assured residents that the government has put adequate measures in place to minimise inconvenience. “We urge motorists to be patient and follow the instructions of traffic officials. The slight delays are temporary and necessary for a successful and safe race,” she noted.
The Lagos State Government encouraged the public to plan their movements accordingly and consider alternative routes during the hours of the race.
