Lagos State has strengthened its cultural tourism landscape with the unveiling of a new Independence Obelisk at TBS, a project Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says will boost heritage conservation and national pride.
Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the monument—unveiled on Thursday, November 20, 2025—as “a symbol of unity, resilience and the indomitable spirit of the Nigerian people.”
The Governor commended the Tafawa Balewa Square Management Board, development partners, architects, artisans and cultural stakeholders for their roles in revitalising the iconic TBS landscape. He said the successful delivery of the project reflects the value of collaboration between government, the private sector and the wider creative community.
“Tafawa Balewa Square is one of Nigeria’s most cherished national sites, where our flag was first hoisted in 1960 to announce our independence to the world,” he said. “This revitalised garden, enhanced by the addition of a magnificent Obelisk, strengthens our collective resolve to preserve the landmarks that tell the story of our nation.”
Sanwo-Olu noted that the Independence Obelisk stands as a “living testament to our journey as a nation,” honouring the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, celebrating the country’s diversity and inspiring today’s generation. The structure, he said, will serve as a learning point for students, historians and tourists.
The Governor added that the monument aligns with his administration’s plan to boost heritage tourism, promote cultural conservation and cement Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading cultural and tourism destination. He explained that the Obelisk will further enrich the historic TBS corridor and attract more visitors.
He also paid special tribute to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, MFR, who served as Chief Host of the event, praising her commitment to national heritage development.
Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to all partners who contributed to the project, noting that their efforts reflect a shared vision to build a future that honours Nigeria’s past.
“As we unveil this Obelisk, let it stand as a beacon of hope, unity and national pride,” he said. “May it remind us that our diversity remains our greatest strength and that together, we can build a Nigeria that reflects the dreams and aspirations of its people.”
