The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has disbursed cheques worth ₦2,171,124,041.87 to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed the development on Tuesday, said the ceremony took place at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, with the Force Management Team, insurance stakeholders, and beneficiaries in attendance.
Hundeyin explained that the benefits covered policy years from 2015 to 2025, including recoveries of long-outstanding claims that had been pending for nearly a decade.
He noted that the latest payment marks the 11th disbursement under the current IGP, bringing the total amount released to ₦24.2 billion, benefitting 9,735 families of fallen officers.
Quoting the IGP, Hundeyin said: “This exercise is not just a routine procedure but a solemn duty of remembrance and responsibility. It reflects our unwavering commitment to honouring the legacies of our departed colleagues by ensuring meaningful support for their families.”
He added that welfare of police personnel—serving, retired, or deceased—remains a cardinal priority of the present administration, stressing that the Force is redesigning its welfare architecture to be stronger, transparent, and fully digitised for prompt disbursement of entitlements.
The IGP also appreciated the Force Insurance Unit for its diligence, the insurance companies for meeting obligations, and the Ministry of Police Affairs for its guidance. He extended gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his consistent support to police welfare initiatives.
