…Reaffirms Police Commitment to Intelligence-Driven Disarmament, Internal Security
In a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, on Thursday, 7th August 2025, hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC) and the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The delegation, led by Dr. Adedeji Ebo, alongside Mr. Anselme Yabouri (UNREC Director), Miss Grub Nolwenn (UNREC staff), and senior representatives from NCCSALW, engaged with the IGP and the Force Management Team to discuss pathways for enhanced inter-agency collaboration in curbing the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons across Nigeria.
The UN team commended the Nigeria Police Force for ongoing efforts, especially in high-risk zones, to dismantle criminal networks reliant on illegal arms.
Reiterating his commitment, the IGP affirmed the Police Force’s resolve to intensify its arms mop-up operations, having already recovered thousands of weapons.
He stressed that illicit arms remain a serious threat to public safety and national stability, and assured that the Force will deepen intelligence-sharing and international partnerships to disrupt trafficking routes and ensure sustainable peace and security nationwide.
