President Bola Tinubu has approved housing initiative for police officers nationwide, just as plans are underway to establish a National Task Force to recover and protect Federal Government assets from encroachment.
The Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa disclosed this at the at the Force Headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday when he met the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
He said the plan will involve collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant ministries and agencies.
Dangiwa, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, and other senior officials, explained that the Task Force is necessitated by the increasing wave of encroachments on Federal Government lands.
He stated the menace has slowed down, and in some cases completely halted, critical national development projects. The Minister stressed that decisive intervention was needed to recover and protect government-owned assets nationwide.
The Minister disclosed that President Tinubu had graciously approved a landmark housing initiative targeted at providing thousands of housing units for police officers across the country.
He noted that the scheme represents a major step towards enhancing police welfare, stressing that adequate housing would contribute significantly to boosting the morale and effectiveness of officers in the discharge of their duties.
Commending the Police for their professionalism, resilience, and service to the nation, the Minister stated that housing and welfare remain key enablers of security agencies’ operational capacity.
He expressed optimism that the combined efforts of the Ministry of Housing, the Police, and other stakeholders will deliver positive results that will benefit both the nation and members of the Force.
Responding, the IGP warmly welcomed the Minister and his delegation, describing the President’s approval of the housing project as a direct response to one of the most pressing welfare needs of police personnel.
He emphasized that welfare is at the core of policing effectiveness, with affordable housing serving as a vital component.
The IGP further pledged the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to the successful implementation of the proposed National Task Force.
He underscored the urgency of recovering encroached lands and securing Federal Government assets, which he described as matters of national importance.
He assured that the Police would provide full support to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development and other partners in driving the initiative.
