The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a fatal road accident involving two iron-rod-laden flatbed Iveco trucks (registration numbers QX 189 KSF and YA 701 AAA) at Ita Oluwo, Ikorodu, a key boundary corridor between Lagos and Ogun States.
According to preliminary findings, the incident occurred when one of the trucks (YA 701 AAA) reportedly suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, ramming into another truck on the same route.
The collision caused extensive damage to both vehicles, widespread panic in the area, and tragically claimed the life of an unidentified woman who was trapped between the wrecked trucks.
Emergency teams from LASTMA, the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), and the Nigeria Police quickly intervened, extricating the victim from the mangled wreckage.
She was later evacuated by officers from the Ogijo Police Division and taken to the Ogun State University Teaching Hospital (OSUTH), Sagamu.
In a statement, LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the victim’s family and described the crash as “a painful reminder of the dangers of mechanical neglect and reckless driving.”
He emphasized the need for articulated vehicle operators to strictly observe speed limits, conduct routine mechanical checks, and ensure driver certification and psychological fitness.
Bakare-Oki further reiterated the Lagos State Government’s determination to enforce traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies.
He urged logistics companies and truck drivers to prioritize vehicle roadworthiness and report any mechanical faults before embarking on journeys.
Normal traffic flow has since been restored along the affected Lagos-Ogun axis, and LASTMA has encouraged the public to report emergencies via its toll-free hotline: 0800-00-LASMA (080000527862).
