The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the tragic deaths of five individuals and the rescue of five others following two separate, speed-related crashes along the Lekki-Epe Expressway on Tuesday.
According to the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the first incident occurred in the early hours near Abijo Bus Stop, inward Epe, where a Mitsubishi pick-up van, reportedly speeding excessively, rammed into a stationary Craneburg Construction Company vehicle parked legally under a pedestrian bridge.
The crash claimed four lives on the spot—three men and one woman—while three other female passengers were rescued and swiftly handed over to the Eleko Division of the Nigeria Police for medical evacuation.
A second fatal crash was recorded overnight near the Frajend Group axis, inward Bogije, where a Toyota Escort SUV collided with a parked Dangote truck.
The driver was killed instantly, while two passengers were seriously injured and extricated from the wreckage by LASTMA operatives before being transported to a medical facility by the Elemoro Police Division.
Reacting to the twin tragedies, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. He emphasized that both accidents were avoidable, warning motorists against the deadly consequences of reckless driving and speeding.
“These deeply saddening occurrences serve as grim reminders of the catastrophic consequences that stem from the willful violation of speed regulations.
“The Lagos State Government has invested heavily in traffic control infrastructure to prevent such tragedies,” Bakare-Oki stated.
