The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has charged Border Patrol Commanders across the country to demonstrate renewed determination in safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and preventing security threats.
The IGP gave the directive during a conference with commanders at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he highlighted the strategic role of the Border Patrol Unit as the nation’s first line of defence against external threats.
He acknowledged the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s land and maritime borders, commending the relentless efforts of officers in curbing crimes at the nation’s frontiers.
Egbetokun, however, stressed that the Police must adapt to the evolving security landscape. “The Nigeria Police Force cannot tackle 21st-century crimes with 20th-century tools. That is why we must embrace technology—surveillance systems, drones, biometric scanners, and real-time data analysis,” he said.
The IGP further underscored the importance of intelligence-led policing, community trust, and collaboration with sister security agencies in ensuring effective border security.
He assured that the welfare of police personnel remains a top priority under his leadership, in recognition of their sacrifices in the line of duty.
Speaking on behalf of the Force, the Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, reaffirmed the commitment of the Police to securing the nation’s borders.
“Our commanders will not relent in preempting and preventing criminal activities at the borders. Nigerians can be assured of the Force’s unyielding dedication to protecting lives, property, and national identity,” Hundeyin stated.
