The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osun State has dismissed allegations that underage persons were registered as voters in Ede North Local Government Area, describing the claim as false and misleading.
The Commission made the clarification in a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Public Affairs Officer, Musa Olurode.
According to the statement, a social media post circulating on Facebook alleged that students in school uniforms were registered as voters at the INEC Local Government Office in Ede North on Friday, February 6, 2026.
INEC, however, said no underage person was registered during the exercise.
“While it is correct that some students of YTD Grammar School, Ojoro Ede, Osun State, in uniforms were brought to INEC Ede North Local Government Office on the said date with the intention of registering, the Electoral Officer and other officials on duty, acting in strict compliance with the law, refused them entry into the office premises. Consequently, no underage person was registered,” the commission stated.
It reiterated that, under the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022, only Nigerian citizens who have attained the age of 18 years are eligible for voter registration, adding that officials have been directed to enforce the provision without exception.
The commission assured residents that it would not condone any action capable of undermining the credibility of the voter registration process, urging the public to rely on verified information from official INEC communication channels.
INEC also called on parents, guardians, school authorities and community leaders to sensitise young persons on the legal requirements for voter registration.
As political activities intensify ahead of the August 8 Osun governorship election, misinformation on social media platforms has increased. The incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election, while former National Inland Waterways Authority Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Also in the race is Dr Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress, among other candidates.
