The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has disclosed that it arrested over 264 environmental law defaulters in the month of July for offences ranging from open defecation, urination, to improper refuse disposal across the state.
The disclosure was made by the Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), at the Agency’s Command Headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi on Wednesday.
According to him, the Agency is fully committed to enforcing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda of maintaining a cleaner and more habitable Lagos for residents and businesses.
“The mandate of Mr. Governor is clear, and as the premier environmental enforcement agency in the State, we must continue to make Lagos habitable and cleaner for business via monitoring of all environs. Hence, we effected the arrests of more than 264 defaulters in the habit of desecrating the State’s environmental laws in July alone and we remain committed to eradicating this menace on a daily basis,” Cole stated.
He lamented the negative impact of open defecation and indiscriminate refuse disposal on public health and air quality, stressing that KAI operatives have been strategically deployed across the State to curb these violations.
Cole further warned against indiscriminate dumping of waste which clogs drains and canals, causing flooding. He urged residents to engage only approved PSP operators and maintain valid waste contracts as required by law, noting that defaulters risk prosecution.
The Corps Marshal also commended the leadership of the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, for his guidance and support towards achieving a cleaner, healthier, and more aesthetically pleasing environment in Lagos.
