The Lagos State Government on Friday disbursed ₦701 million to families of 146 deceased public servants, reinforcing its commitment to workforce welfare.
The payment, which covered a total of ₦701,054,344.57, was made to 232 beneficiaries of civil servants who died in active service between May 2025 and January 2026.
Speaking during the official presentation of cheques at the STO Resource Centre, Alausa, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi, said the gesture reflects the humane and people-centred leadership of Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He described the insurance death benefits scheme as a deliberate policy to ensure that families of deceased employees are not left without support.
“The cheques you will receive today are not just figures on paper; they represent recognition of the years of loyal service your loved ones gave to this State,” Oluyomi said.
“They are a clear message that the Lagos State Government stands with you, even in this difficult season. My hope is that these benefits will ease immediate pressures, help you stabilise, and support the dreams your loved ones had for their families.”
The commissioner added that the state government views itself not only as an employer but as a community that cares for its workforce beyond active service.
He urged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds, particularly in areas such as education, small business development, debt settlement and overall family stability.
In his remarks, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Hon. Femi Saheed, advised beneficiaries to channel the funds into meaningful ventures that would secure the future of the children left behind.
“This support should serve as a foundation for rebuilding. It is important to prioritise investments that will guarantee long-term stability and growth for your families,” he said.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Mahmud Tajudeen Alao, said the exercise underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its workforce.
“This insurance scheme was established to ensure that even in death, our employees’ families are not abandoned. It is a practical demonstration of government’s responsibility and compassion,” he stated.
Alao commended the governor for sustaining welfare-focused policies and assured that the ministry would continue to ensure transparency and efficiency in processing entitlements.
“I wish to assure all public servants that this administration remains steadfast in strengthening staff welfare policies. We will continue to work diligently with all stakeholders to ensure prompt payment of all benefits,” he added.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants, Comrade Segun Balogun, described the initiative as another indication of the administration’s people-oriented governance.
“This support is a stepping stone towards rebuilding. I urge beneficiaries to apply this benefit strategically and invest in sustainable ventures that will secure their families’ future,” he said.
On his part, the Managing Director of LASACO Assurance Plc, represented by the General Manager, Mr. Muyiwa Anwoju, commended the Lagos State Government for its consistency in settling insurance claims.
“Lagos State has continued to distinguish itself as a pacesetter in workforce welfare, particularly in ensuring that families of deceased staff receive their benefits promptly,” he noted.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Abisola Modupelola Adebayo expressed appreciation to the state government for the timely intervention.
“We are deeply grateful for this support. It will go a long way in addressing pressing needs, especially in the areas of education, healthcare and general family welfare,” she said.
She assured that beneficiaries would heed the advice given and utilise the funds judiciously.
