The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to building the next generation of farmers through the Lagos Agricultural Scholars Programme (LASP)—an initiative aimed at introducing secondary school students to modern, practical agriculture while strengthening pathways to food security.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, disclosed this during the commissioning of agricultural projects at Ansar-ur-Deen Grammar School, Surulere; CMS Grammar School, Bariga; Holy Child College, Ikoyi; and Vetland Senior Grammar School, Agege.

Olusanya explained that the initiative is an evolution of the Ministry’s long-standing school farm project but has now been modernised to integrate technology, sustainability, and value-chain development.

She stressed that while many youths gravitate towards football, entertainment, or fintech, the LASP seeks to reawaken interest in agriculture by showcasing its profitability, innovation potential, and societal impact.

“Behind us today, you can see one such system where waste from aquaculture is used to irrigate plants, while organic waste is converted into inputs for open-field cultivation.

This circular model shows students how technology and sustainability can transform food systems,” Olusanya noted.

She added that the programme focuses on aquaculture, horticulture, and poultry, giving students hands-on experience with circular and sustainable models of farming.

Highlighting the broader vision, the Commissioner linked the project to the ongoing “Produce for Lagos Programme”, a farmer registration drive tied to the ₦500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund.

According to her, the platform will harmonise farmer data, streamline support, and open access to resources for both farmers and service providers across Nigeria.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Emmanuel Audu, described the Agric Scholars Programme as a visionary intervention that bridges classroom theory with practical application, enabling students to see agriculture as both a business and a viable career path.

He assured that the project will be expanded to all secondary schools across Lagos, making agriculture a permanent component of the education system while equipping students with agribusiness and entrepreneurial skills.

Principals and Agricultural Science teachers of the participating schools expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government, noting that the initiative has significantly improved students’ interest and competence in farming practices.
