Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arrested an ex-convict, Segun Kolawole, just five days after his release from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, for allegedly stealing an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone and ₦200,000 cash from a trader in Opebi, Ikeja.
Kolawole, 25, was apprehended around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Oshodi Market after RRS operatives noticed he was in possession of a large sum of money and became suspicious. Upon interrogation, he could not give a satisfactory explanation for the ₦80,000 found on him or the phone in his possession.
According to SP Adebisi Abimbola, the spokesperson for Lagos Police Command, “Subsequent investigation revealed that Kolawole had stolen the cash and mobile phone around 5:00 a.m. from a trader who was asleep near Peka, Opebi.
The victim was later traced and confirmed the theft.”Recovered from the suspect were ₦80,000 cash, an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone, newly bought clothes, and shoes.
In a related development, RRS operatives also arrested two suspected pickpockets, Sodiq Isa, 27, and Adekanmbi Ganiu, 21 — for attempting to steal mobile phones from commuters at Ojota Bridge and Orile Roundabout, respectively, around 5:00 p.m. on last Friday.
The suspects, according to police, confessed to the crimes during preliminary investigation.“All three suspects have confessed to their involvement in the offences and will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” said Adebisi.
