In continuation of its clean-up enforcement operation to rid the State of street trading, obstruction of roads, and other environmental infractions, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce has arrested 21 suspected street traders at Iyana-Iba and Ojo areas of the State.
Director, Public Affairs of the Agency, Gbadeyanka AbdulRaheem, said the operation was part of the ongoing statewide effort to ensure free flow of traffic, restore orderliness, and promote environmental discipline in public spaces.
According to him, the raid targeted recalcitrant street traders who had converted newly constructed roads and walkways along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway into illegal trading spots, creating nuisance and traffic bottlenecks.
“During the raid exercise, a total of 21 suspects were arrested — comprising 15 males and 6 females — all of whom were apprehended for displaying their wares on the highways and walkways.
The confiscated goods will be forfeited to the State through the court in line with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Laws of 2017 and the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018,” AbdulRaheem stated.
He added that CSP Akerele, Chairman of the Taskforce, has reiterated the State Government’s zero tolerance for illegal trading activities that impede the free movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
“Trading on the highways increases travel time and endangers the lives of innocent motorists. The Taskforce will not hesitate to bring offenders before the law to serve as deterrent to others,” he warned.
The statement further noted that the Agency would sustain its clean-up operations across all parts of Lagos, targeting street traders, illegal ticketers, and operators of unauthorized bus stops.
“All street traders and illegal operators are advised to desist from obstructing public roads. The enforcement will continue until full compliance is achieved,” AbdulRaheem added.
