The Lagos State Government has called on homeowners in government-owned estates to embrace sustainable practices and efficient maintenance culture to preserve infrastructure and enhance livability.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting with residents of Lagos State Government-owned housing estates in the Lagos division, held at Babatunde Raji Fashola Housing Estate, Iponri, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, stressed that sustainability remains critical to the growth, safety, and long-term value of housing estates.
He noted that the Ministry’s goal is to create thriving estates that are “not only beautiful but also sustainable and resilient,” while ensuring eco-friendly environments and improved quality of life for residents.
To achieve this, he urged homeowners and facility managers to work together, prioritize routine maintenance, and comply with planning laws and environmental regulations to prevent infrastructure decay.
Toriola further revealed that a dedicated monitoring and compliance unit has been set up to enforce adherence to physical planning regulations. He also advised homeowners to pay their estate dues — including service charges, insurance premiums, and other agreed contributions — promptly, to support estate sustainability.
The Permanent Secretary emphasized that the present administration is committed to boosting housing stock through the completion of ongoing state-funded projects and partnerships, including joint venture initiatives expected to deliver more homes before 2027.
At the meeting, government agencies such as the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Health Management Agency (Ilera Eko), LASACO Assurance, and Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) made presentations on sustainability and effective estate management.
The session was attended by residents and representatives from estates including Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate, Ajah; Oba Adeyinka Oyekan Housing Estate, Lekki; LagosHOMS Surulere; and the host estate, Babatunde Raji Fashola Estate, Iponri.
