The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has denied condoning extortion, announcing an immediate probe into claims circulating online that its personnel collected ₦100,000 from commercial bus operators on Coastal Road.
The allegation, which surfaced in a social media post by a platform identified as “Objectv Media,” accused some officers of arresting commercial drivers and demanding payment before releasing their vehicles.
Reacting, the agency described the claim as serious and deserving of thorough scrutiny, stressing that its operations are guided by strict ethical standards and zero tolerance for misconduct.
Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment of LASTMA, said the authority has already commenced a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the matter.
“The Authority views these allegations with utmost seriousness. LASTMA remains a disciplined and professional institution that does not, under any circumstances, condone misconduct, abuse of office or extortion by any of its personnel,” he said.
He added that the ongoing probe would be thorough and transparent, assuring the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with established regulations.
“This inquiry has commenced in earnest, and any officer found guilty at the end of the investigation will face the full weight of the law in accordance with our rules and disciplinary procedures,” Adebayo stated.
The agency also called on the individual who made the allegation, identified as Tosin, to present verifiable evidence to support the claims.
“In the interest of fairness and due process, we hereby invite the individual to appear at the Office of the General Manager at LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi to provide concrete evidence, as the burden of proof lies with the accuser,” he said.
Reiterating its commitment to transparency and accountability, LASTMA urged members of the public to continue reporting any perceived misconduct through official and verified channels.
Adebayo emphasized that the agency remains dedicated to maintaining order on Lagos roads while upholding the rights of all road users.
“LASTMA is resolute in its pursuit of a traffic management system anchored on fairness, integrity and professionalism. We encourage the public to report any infractions, as we remain committed to sustaining public trust,” he added.
