The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued an eight-month-old baby and four others from an accident involving four vehicles at Otedola Bridge, inward Tollgate, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday and involved a Hydra truck (APP 261 FA), an LT commercial bus (EPE 574 YC), a Ford vehicle (GG 283 XQ) and an unregistered Mark flat-body truck.
According to LASTMA, preliminary findings indicate that the victims — including a woman carrying the infant on her back — were attempting to cross the expressway when the speeding LT commercial bus ran into them. The impact caused a chain collision involving the other vehicles.
Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for LASTMA, said officers responded swiftly and successfully rescued the baby, who was unhurt.
“The four adult victims sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the Lagos State Accident & Emergency Centre at Tollgate for medical attention,” Adebayo said.
He added that policemen from the Alausa Police Station provided security support during the rescue operation, ensuring the safety of responders and maintaining order at the scene.
Adebayo also confirmed that all wrecked vehicles were cleared from the road to restore free traffic flow inward Tollgate.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and wished them a quick recovery. He urged pedestrians to make use of the pedestrian bridges provided by the government, warning that crossing high-speed highways remains extremely dangerous.
