The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that five people sustained serious injuries in a tanker–commercial bus collision at Toyota Bus Stop, opposite the Guardian newspaper headquarters, inward Oshodi.
The crash, which occurred during peak-hour traffic, involved a Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) tanker (registration number T28128LA) and a fully loaded Volkswagen T4 bus (registration number GGE 526 YG).
According to security reports from Oloto Police Station, the tanker, travelling at excessive speed, suffered sudden brake failure, causing the driver to lose control and collide violently with the moving bus.
LASTMA operatives, in a swift and coordinated rescue operation, secured the scene, extracted the victims, and prevented further hazards.
One critically injured passenger was rushed to hospital by a Good Samaritan, while ambulances from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) transported the remaining four for treatment.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy to the victims and reiterated the need for heavy-duty vehicle operators, particularly tanker drivers, to ensure their vehicles remain in top mechanical condition, with special attention to brake systems.
He condemned the disregard for speed limits on Lagos highways, stressing that compliance could reduce the severity of such accidents.
