The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, has called on school principals across the country to promote the responsible and positive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching and learning.
Ahmad made the call on Tuesday during the ongoing 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Principals of Federal Unity Colleges, held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja.
The five-day conference, which began on Monday and will end on Friday, brought together principals from the 115 Federal Unity Colleges nationwide, alongside senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education. The theme of the event is “Education for Renewed Hope: Repositioning Secondary Education for Economic Empowerment and National Development.”
Speaking at the forum, Ahmad disclosed that the Federal Government, as part of its recent curriculum review, had introduced a new subject titled Digital Technology, which incorporates lessons on Artificial Intelligence.
“As part of the curriculum review process, a new subject, Digital Technology, was introduced for secondary schools,” she said. “It includes components on Artificial Intelligence, how to use AI responsibly for studies, and its positive application in classroom teaching and learning.”
The minister explained that the government is adopting a gradual approach to the deployment of AI in schools to ensure effective implementation.
“The Ministry of Education has a huge agenda on digitisation. We are training teachers to understand how to use digital and AI tools effectively in classrooms, while aligning the curriculum with these innovations,” Ahmad noted.
She added that the Digital Technology curriculum had already been rolled out for Senior Secondary 1 (SS1) students, with plans to extend it to lower levels, starting from primary education.
“Our Unity Colleges already have basic facilities, but we’re making additional provisions and training teachers and principals to ensure smooth implementation. We are on an e-turn and hope to achieve full implementation soon,” she said.
Also speaking, the Director of Senior Secondary Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Binta Abdulkadir, described the AGM as a platform for principals to exchange ideas, strengthen management capacity, and align with new policy directions.
“The Honourable Minister of State has urged principals to embrace the digitisation culture and ensure full ethical curriculum coverage. Through continuous training, principals will continue to improve, and this forum provides opportunities to share best practices,” Abdulkadir stated.
