The Kebbi State Police Command has rescued a newborn baby girl who was buried alive by her 20-year-old mother, Maryam Atiku, in Dandi Local Government Area of the state.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on June 25, 2025, when Maryam allegedly strangled and buried her newborn shortly after delivery in a bush near Malam Yaro village.
The shocking act came to light the following day when Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, a local farmer, noticed freshly disturbed soil resembling a shallow grave on his farmland.
On raising alarm, villagers rushed to the scene and dug up the site, miraculously finding the infant alive. The baby was immediately rushed to the General Hospital, Kamba, where doctors confirmed she was stable.
Police detectives swiftly arrested the suspect, who confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Sani, condemned the act in strong terms, stressing the Command’s zero tolerance for child abuse, exploitation, and gender-based violence.
He also urged parents and guardians to safeguard children’s lives and futures regardless of economic hardship.The CP expressed appreciation to the First Lady of Kebbi State, Hajia Zainab Nasare Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), for her support in ensuring the rescued baby received proper care.
He further commended Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad for his vigilance and bravery. The suspect has since been arraigned in court, with the police vowing to pursue justice to serve as a deterrent.
