The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has identified 39 tertiary institutions that are yet to refund students who paid their tuition fees before benefiting from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed this in a statement issued on X on Wednesday, saying the affected institutions had already received tuition payments from NELFUND on behalf of eligible students but had not reimbursed those who made payments before the loan disbursements were processed.
According to him, the publication of the list is intended to promote transparency, accountability and ensure that affected students receive their refunds without further delay.
“The listed institutions have received NELFUND tuition payments on behalf of eligible students but are yet to refund students who had earlier paid their fees before the disbursement,” Babatunde said.
“Our objective is to ensure transparency and accountability while protecting students from unnecessary financial hardship.”
The institutions named by NANS include University of Nigeria, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, University of Calabar, Rivers State University, Delta State University, Adekunle Ajasin University, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, and Yobe State University.
Others are Modibbo Adama University, Federal University Lafia, Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Kaduna State Polytechnic, Plateau State University, Imo State University, and Ekiti State University.
The student body urged the affected institutions to immediately commence the refund process, stressing that students who paid their tuition before NELFUND disbursements should not be made to bear additional financial burdens.
NANS also warned that it would continue to monitor compliance and engage relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive the refunds due to them.
“Students who paid their fees before the NELFUND intervention deserve prompt reimbursement. Institutions should act without delay and uphold the principles of accountability and fairness,” the statement added.
The association said the list would serve as a public accountability measure while efforts continue to ensure that all outstanding refunds are processed promptly.
