The Lagos State Police Command has debunked publications in some newspapers yesterday declaring that hundreds of Boko Haram suspects were arrested in the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin refuted the claim in a statement on Friday.
He noted that following the publication, the Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, directed an immediate investigation into the report to ascertain the true position of the claim.
Hundeyin stated that the outcome of the investigation revealed that there was nowhere in the state where Boko Haram members were seen or sighted or arrested.
Hundeyin said that the command has deployed surveillance detectives and other formations of the Force to the mentioned places for the purpose of verification of the claim.
According to him, no one has confirmed the presence or the arrest of such group as alleged in the said report throughout the state.
“The report in its entirety is false, malicious, and ill-intended to cause fear and apprehension in the minds of the public,” Hundeyin said.
He urged residents to disregard the report as untrue and a figment of the imagination of the writer which was very unfortunate and despicable and should be out rightly ignored. He urged Lagosians to go about their duties and means of livelihood without fear or apprehension.
Hundeyin cautioned the media not to allow themselves to be used to spread fake news, and outright falsehood that could jeopardise the peace and tranquillity being enjoyed in the state.
He advised journalists to always verify their information before going to the press while assuring the residents of the state of their safety at all times..
