The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of a commercial tricycle operator and serious injuries to two passengers following a fatal crash on Egbe Bridge, inward Ikotun yesterday.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred when a Toyota Venza (registration number GWA 659 RD), travelling from the Ejigbo axis, attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre atop the bridge and collided head-on with an oncoming tricycle (registration number EPE 245 QM). The tricycle rider died instantly, while a male and female passenger sustained multiple fractures.
LASTMA officials swiftly rescued the injured from the wreckage before the Ikotun Police Division evacuated them to General Hospital, Isolo, for urgent treatment.
The Toyota Venza driver reportedly fled the scene. Police operatives have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
He urged motorists to exercise vigilance and avoid overtaking on bridges and other high-risk road sections, warning that impatience and traffic law violations can have fatal consequences.
“This heartrending incident serves as a grim testament to the lethal consequences of impatience and the blatant flouting of traffic laws,” Bakare-Oki said.
“All road users must cultivate discipline, foresight, and strict adherence to safety protocols to avert needless tragedies on our roads.” He added.
