As the festive season draws near, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has heightened vigilance across Abuja, issuing a strong warning against the sale and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other banned pyrotechnics.
The Command says the clampdown has become necessary due to the rising circulation of explosive devices capable of endangering lives, fuelling security breaches, and causing panic among residents.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the advisory followed the increasing circulation of such explosive devices across the nation’s capital. She noted that firecrackers pose significant risks, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and widespread panic among residents.
“Firecrackers are dangerous, capable of causing injuries, triggering fire incidents, and creating unnecessary fear within communities,” Adeh said. She added that the loud explosive sounds could also “provide cover for criminals to commit offences under the guise of celebration.”
The spokesperson further emphasized that vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with health challenges, are often the most affected by the uncontrolled use of pyrotechnics. She disclosed that police officers have been directed to enforce the ban rigorously during the holiday period. “We will arrest and prosecute anyone found selling, purchasing, or using these prohibited items,” she said.
