Hundreds of protesters, on Tuesday evening, barricaded the Iyana Oworo end of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos to protest the demolition of their properties carried out on Saturday by policemen acting on the orders of the Lagos State Government.
Carrying banners with inscriptions such as “No to Land-Grabbing,” the enraged demonstrators decried the demolition of their homes, alleging it was a deliberate ploy to seize their land.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Moshood Jimoh, who arrived the scene in company of the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Chairman, Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Tayo Akerele appealed to the protesters to be law abiding and eschew violence.
In an update posted on X, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, wrote, “Calm has been fully restored on 3rd Mainland Bridge after the swift intervention of CP Olohundare Jimoh.
The Lagos Police Commissioner personally visited the scene, ensured safety and order, and reopened the road. Traffic is now flowing smoothly.”
By late afternoon, calm had returned to the area, with traffic moving freely across the bridge.
Police authorities assured residents and commuters that security personnel remain on ground to prevent a recurrence, while the state government is yet to issue a statement on the wider dispute over demolitions in Oworonshoki.
