The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that such action could destabilise the state.
The party’s position was contained in a statement issued on Thursday and signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, following an emergency plenary session of the House during which impeachment proceedings were reportedly initiated.
Describing the development as “untenable,” the Rivers APC cautioned lawmakers against actions capable of plunging the state into political instability.
“The attention of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has been drawn to the latest unfortunate developments coming out from the chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the statement said.
While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature, the party said it firmly opposed the impeachment process.
“We concede that the legislature is an independent arm in the tripod of governance, and the constitutional responsibilities of checks and balances are within its democratic purview,” it stated.
“However, our position as of today is that we solemnly reject the resort to an impeachment process against our Governor and his deputy.”
The APC argued that the impeachment threat appeared to be linked to budgetary issues and described such grounds as insufficient.
According to the party, during the period of emergency rule, a budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025 and subsequently approved by both chambers of the National Assembly, with the fiscal plan expected to run until August 2026.
“It is therefore important to note that if the Governor is comfortable with the composition of the approved budget, he may elect not to present any supplementary budget,” the statement said, adding that the constitution allows a state governor a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.
